From Dec 1st to Dec 7th, lab members Wang Dian and Yu Jiayu (they are also members of GTSI Engineers for People (EFP) club), visited Malawi with Lucas, a country in southeast Africa, to conduct field assessment and research on water supply and sanitation. Wang Dian and Yu Jiayu were also awarded fellowships from Shenzhen Universiade International Scholarship Foundation to support the visit.
This visit to Africa is an important step for GTSI students to participate in global sustainability projects. Through visits to schools and communities in Malawi, team members gained a first-hand understanding of the local drinking water and sanitation challenges. The understanding laid the foundation for the future to help improve the local schools and communities through the engineering knowledge and practical actions they learned.
The team also carried out on-site experiments on resource recovery from urine and validated the feasibility of the technology in rural, remote areas.
